Spring is here at last after one of the longest, wettest winters in living memory, so let’s rejoice and get outside into our gardens and enjoy the sunshine to celebrate National Gardening Week!
Here at Bromborough Pool Garden Centre for Autism Together our greenhouses are bursting at the seams with a myriad of colourful plants ready for you to make up your baskets and pots and plant into your borders. All our plants have been lovingly grown and tended by our service users with help from our wonderful supporting staff; their passion really shows in the quality of plants that we have this year. If you want us to take the strain of making your hanging baskets up for you we will be delighted to, just bring them in as soon as possible to be refilled or we can supply the basket as well and they will be ready to hang at the end of the month… we guarantee they will be much admired! We are also filling pots this year so just bring them along next time you pop in.
This year we have introduced our instant basket packs of 9 plants for only £6.99, great value and they take the guess work out of choosing the right plants. We are very proud of our green credentials here at Bromborough Pool Garden Centre. We collect and sort and reuse plastic pots so they don’t end up as landfill, we will take your used pots in and give them a new life here! This year we are very proud that a lot of the plants for sale have come from our own cuttings and seed sowings.
This is the busiest time of the year in the garden. Now is the time to start cutting your lawn providing it’s not too wet. Set the blades on the mower on the highest setting for the first few cuts and gradually decrease the blade height over the next few weeks, never cut the grass too low as this will increase the chances of the lawn getting moss. If you are suffering with moss now is the time to apply a dressing of lawn sand and when the moss has been killed simply scatter grass seed over the bare patches when rain is forecast (well that is probably every day!) its known simply as over-seeding.
If you haven’t already done so now is the time you need to be getting on with cutting down any dead growth on herbaceous plants to tidy up the borders and let the sun get to all the new shoots to make them grow. You can start planting and sowing in the veg garden but wait until the end of the month to plant out the more tender crops such as French and Runner Beans and Sweet Corn as we are still getting cold nights and the plants may get checked. Don’t forget to sow a few herb seeds now; nothing beats fresh picked mint to sprinkle onto freshly dug new potatoes.
As well as Thompson and Morgan seeds this year we are proud to announce that we have been chosen as stockists of FRANCHI SEEDS OF ITALY famously endorsed by all the most prestigious chefs and growers. After all that hard work you have done in your garden you will have well and truly earned a treat in our lovely coffee shop. Why not come and enjoy one of our famous afternoon teas (book during the week for our very special offer of £9.99 for two), or why not just pop in for our coffee and cake deal (£2.50) including Lee Hollywood’s wonderful fresh cakes.
Looking forward to seeing you soon.
