Notes to editors

Autism Together  is a multi-award-winning charity and service provider supporting over 400 people on the autism spectrum. Founded in Wirral in 1968 by a group of concerned parents, we now employ over a thousand staff and have operations in North Wales, Merseyside and Cheshire.

  • We offer specialist services for families and children, residential care, respite care and supported living.
  • We have a garden centre, a park, a farm, a canal boat, a rock-rap band and a choir.
  • Our service users  can learn diverse skills in activities  such as swimming, cycling, trampolining, rock climbing, painting, sculpting and much more.
  • We act as a voice for people on the autism spectrum in the North West and are campaigning for Liverpool to be the UK’s leading autism-friendly city and for ‘mate crime’ (the bullying and manipulation of vulnerable people) to be recognised in law.

Jane Carolan

Quality and Support Director

Cert. HSC (Open), Dip. RSA, Dip. HSC (Open), BA, ME’d

Jane has spent many years working in the Health and Social Care field, starting as a support worker in Lancaster working at Beaumont College (Scope). The college gave Jane a great understanding of personalisation and promotion of skill development for all people who have a disability. Jane went on to work for the Royal College for the Blind in Sevenoaks, again supporting individuals to gain skills to maximise their life potential.

Jane was then appointed as Director of Care at a new school for children with autism and significant communication difficulties. Prior’s Court School, based in Newbury, has since been recognised internationally for its excellent standards of education and care for children with ASC. During her time here Jane gained NVQ Level 5 in Management, a Degree in Health & Social Care and visited South Carolina, USA, gaining Level 2 in TEACCH.

Jane has worked at Autism Together since 2008 and manages residential, supported living, respite, children and families and day services. Jane has supported the organisation during a change in culture and attitude to the way in which Autism Together supports people who have an autistic spectrum condition; promoting visual structure, communication strategies, and underpinning knowledge of autism for the staff team. One of Jane’s latest projects includes giving service users an opportunity to use iPads for communication.

Jane is dedicated to personal development and has completed her Master’s degree in Autism.
