Wirral Autistic Society’s Fundraising Officer, Rick Myers has once again shown there are many strings to his bow by creating a new Liver Bird, The Spirit of Liverpool, which landed on the banks Mersey today (Wednesday 13th May 2015) and was officially unveiled by Deputy Mayor, Councillor Wendy Simon, when the giant liner, The Royal Princess, arrived in the Mersey.
The 8ft bronzed bird, a Liver Birds Inc project, has been created by sculptor Rick Myers and will welcome the tens of thousands of tourists arriving on cruise liners this summer.
The modern version of the bird has been developed over the past six years and smaller versions have sold to more than 40 countries around the world. One was presented to the Queen when she visited the Royal Liver Building.
Journalist, Arthur Johnson, a director of Liver Birds Inc, said: “We have had fantastic support for the project from the City Council, Merseytravel, the business community and a wide range of celebrities.
The new version of the bird has been sponsored by Love2shop, the Wirral-based rewards and incentives specialists who have a proud record of supporting the local community. It has been dedicated to the memory of the late Paul Rice who was seen by politicians, business and trade union leaders and in particular football fans throughout the region as a person who epitomised ‘The Spirit of Liverpool’.
Rick Myers said: “It will be a dream come true to see the giant version of the bird on the banks of the Mersey welcoming all these thousands of visitors to the region.”
Liver Birds Inc have also published a children’s book about the history of the bird as well as a DVD of the story. Further details are available on www.liverbirdsinc.com
