There are about 120,000 school aged children on the autism spectrum in England, and most of them are in mainstream schools.

Every teacher will teach an autistic child and they want better training to equip them for this. But at the moment there is no compulsory autism training for teachers.

Children on the autism spectrum and their parents say that better autism understanding would make the biggest difference to their experience of school, and improve their educational progress. Eighty per cent of parents say that the lack of support in school for their autistic child has a negative impact on their self-esteem, and social and communication skills.

The next generation of teachers and children deserve the right start. Right now the Government is reviewing the Initial Teacher Training framework in England. We want to make sure that every new teacher is trained in autism.
